We posted this article about our treatment of immigrants in June, of 2018. The situation has changed—for the worse. A little girl, seven years old, died from dehydration last week, while in custody of the border patrol.
The majority of Americans were horrified by the spectacle of the last six weeks of children separated by the United States Trump government, from their immigrant parents, crossing the border seeking asylum. There is no doubt, that our broken immigration system contributes to our “Mass Incarceration Crisis.”
The United States has the most inmates in the world, 25% of all inmates, despite only having 5% of the world’s population. We have more jails-prisons than Russian and China–combined. There are numerous factors such as mandatory sentencing, locking up the mentally ill, and the incarceration of the addicted, which has created our unique “Mass Incarceration Crisis.”
The American rush to lock up anyone has reached new highs under the Trump administration. The Trump administration increased the detention of asylum seekers.
The present government (in contrast to prior administrations) decided to prosecute larger numbers of immigrants for illegal entry, which included great numbers of asylum seekers. By pursuing criminal prosecution of asylum seekers, who have entered illegally, the Trump administration could and did separate children, including toddlers and infants, from their parents.
The Trump administration designated specific lockups for toddlers and infants, in true Orwellian terms, “Tender Age Facilities.” Doctors and attorneys, who visited the shelters, told the press–“tender age facilities are “playrooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis.” South Texas pediatrician Marsha Griffin told the AP,”The shelters aren’t the problem, it’s taking kids from their parents that’s the problem.”
Utah’s conservative republican Senator Orrin Hatch, tweeted, “‘Tender age shelters’ is a chilling phrase we will not soon forget.”
