Tyrrell Prison Work Farm Visiting Information:

Visiting an Inmate at Tyrrell Prison Work Farm
The North Carolina department of correction encourages friends and family members of inmates who demonstrate a positive influence to communicate and visit with an inmate. This can help the inmate in the rehabilitation process, and eventually with his or her reintegration back into society.

To visit an inmate you must fill out an application form. Inmates must mail this form to you and can have a maximum of 18 applications. An application must be completed for each adult and minor. Completed applications must be sent to the inmate at the institution they reside. Inmates cannot just fill out an application for a person as it requires the applicants signature and sworn statements. Incomplete applications will be REJECTED.

Applicants over the age of 16 must attach a copy of his or her drivers license to the application. Driver License ID and State
issued ID’s must be issued by any State Division of Motor Vehicles. Anyone under the age of 16 must have a copy of their birth certificate attached to the application.

It is the inmate’s responsibility to notify the visitor of their application status.

It is the visitor’s responsibility to update their application information. (i.e. address, phone numbers, etc.) Incorrect application information could lead to an approved visitor becoming disapproved.

Upon reaching the age of 16, a minor must update their visitor application to include a copy of a photo ID.

Hi: Can I send postage stamps to an inmate if I order them through the United States Postal Service and have them mailed directly to the inmate?

      Hi PJ,

Many prisons require the inmates to purchase stamps from the commissary.

The information above states that “Completed applications must be sent to the inmate at the institution they reside.” However, the actual form (DC-949, Rev. 07/08) states in big red ink on the bottom of the application, “APPLICATIONS MUST BE RETURNED TO FACILITY SUPERINTENDENT. DO NOT RETURN TO THE INMATE”.

Can you please advise to whom the application and copy of DL should be returned and at which address??

    • PrisonPath December 18, 2014 at 3:16 pm #

      Hi Benji,

It is our understanding that the completed applications are returned to the facility administration as indicated on the application. We recommend calling the prison directly to confirm the process.
