Downeast Correctional Facility Visiting Information:

Effective January 29, 2012,
there will be a change in the visit schedule.
There will no longer be visits on Mondays and evening visits will be added. Evening visits will be added to Thursday, Firday, Saturday and Sunday 6:30 - 8:30 for prisoners housed in Medium and Close custody units. There are no other changes to any existing rules or policies.

The new schedule will be as follows, resulting in no visits January 30-31, nor February 1, and evening* visits beginning Thursday, February 2, 2012.

As a result of these changes, the times of the visit phone line operation have been reviewed and will also be effected. The new operational times for the visit phone line are as follows:

Visit requests made by phone must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
The number to call is (207) 273-5301.
Calls are accepted Monday through Friday between 8:00 and 11:30 AM. Additional hours are Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Visit request forms are available in the MSP lobby for vistors to use to schedule visits as well.
E-mailed visits requests can be submitted at any time but must be sent at least seven (7) days in advance of the requested visit. Fill in an online request.

Frequency of Visits
Visitation is based upon custody status.

Prisoners housed in the Medium Unit are eligible for three (3) visits per week.
Prisoners housed in the Close Unit are eligible for two (2) visits per week.
Administrative Segregation, Disciplinary Status, and High Risk prisoners are eligible for one (1) (one-hour) visit per week. (Non-Contact Only) Non-Contact visiting provides for the prisoner and his visitor to be separated by a glass partition.
The visit week begins on Thursday and ends on Sunday.
Visitation Clearance

No visitor except immediate family members shall be on more than one (1) prisoner’s visit list.
Immediate family includes spouse, natural, foster or adoptive mother, father, son, daughter, grandfather or grandmother, grandchild, brother or sister, or step-mother, step-father, step-son, step-daughter, step-grandfather or step-grandmother, step-grandchild or step-brother or step-sister.
Visitor Clearance Forms can be obtained from the prisoner that you wish to visit, from the Lobby Officer, Maine State Prison, or from this website.
Fill out an application, only one name per application.
Make sure that you sign the application and return it Attention: Visits, Maine State Prison.
Clearances may take up to six (6) weeks for processing. It may take longer if an applicant has a criminal record.
Family members as defined above may be granted NON-CONTACT visits prior to being cleared for CONTACT visits.
Maine State Prison recommends arriving a half-hour prior to your scheduled visit to allow adequate time to check in and be escorted to the visit.

PROGRAMS


The Educational Program is geared for a high school diploma and/or a G.E.D. There is a NovaNET program, which allows prisoners to increase their skills in grades 6 through 12. The NovaNET also offers several college courses via a closed circuit with the Southern Maine Vocational College.

The Vocational Programs are staffed by degreed instructors in the following fields: Upholstery, Welding, and Building Trades. An Industries program was instituted in July 2001, for the manufacture of denim jeans for the entire Department of Corrections prisoner population.

The Community Restitution Program provides other State Agencies, Local Municipalities, and non-profit organizations with assistance in maintaining their facilities. The firefighting crew travels throughout the state assisting the State of Maine Forestry Department. This group has been active for well over ten years and is highly acclaimed for its firefighting efforts.

The Treatment Program consists of psychological treatment with counselors in Substance Abuse Education, Relapse Prevention and Individual Substance Counseling, and Crisis Intervention groups.

Duration:

No time limit unless space availability is limited.

    Hi my nephew is there and i would like to send him money and was told i had to put it in a postal money order. But not sure if i need to put the money order in his name or in Downeast name. also I would like to come visit. I am not his mother but was always the closet thing he had to a mother. Please let me know if and when i could visit him. and how to make out this money order thank you.

      Please note the following information about sending money to an inmate at Downeast Correctional Facility:
      Welcome to the Department of Corrections Money Deposit Service

      This online service makes it possible for you to make online deposits to the general (trust) and phone accounts of eligible adult prisoners or juvenile residents, with the convenience of a credit card payment. This service is provided by a third party working in partnership with the State of Maine. The total amount you pay includes funds to develop, maintain and enhance the State’s official web portal, Maine.gov and Maine.gov online services like this one. To make deposits to an individual’s general (trust) or phone account you must be a registered user of this service. You only need to register once, and then you will be able to log in with your registered username and password and make deposits. There is no cost to register. Register Now
      Service Rules:

      You may now make more than one deposit per week.
      You must be a registered user in order to make a deposit online (registration is free). Register Now
      Each deposit must be made with the same credit card you registered initially.
      The maximum amount you may deposit is $100 to a general (trust) account and $100 to a phone account. NOTE: If deposits are to be made to both the general (trust) and phone account, these must be paid within a single transaction.
      Notice – Funds deposited through this service are non-refundable
      Deposits to a phone account can only be used by the adult prisoner or juvenile resident to place phone calls through the Maine Department of Corrections debit calling system. Monies in this account cannot be transferred to the general (trust) account.
      Deposits to a general (trust) account may be used by the adult prisoner or juvenile resident for purchases of allowable personal property items. Monies in this account may be transferred by the prisoner or juvenile resident to their phone account.
      If your address, email, or credit card information changes, you will need to contact Technical Support to update your registration.
      Deposited funds will be available to the individual approximately 3 business days following your transaction.

      To use this service, you will need:

      The MDOC number and date of birth of the individual you wish to make a deposit for.
      A valid credit or debit card with a Visa or MasterCard logo. Prepaid Cards will not be accepted.
      An email address.
