Pres. Clinton or Pres. Trump: Easy Choice

As of today, Americans will have to choose between Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump as our next president. If your goal is criminal justice reform, the choice is easy. Democrat President Obama has made criminal justice reform one of his priorities. He launched new policies to reduce the number of inmates and to help the more than 600,000 inmates released annually to become “productive, contributing members of their families and communities.”

The Democrats have called for reform of a justice system that has the most inmates and prisons in the world. Hillary Clinton, in her April 2015 speech on criminal justice reform, listed five points which included ending our era of mass incarceration by finding, “alternative punishments for low-level offenders.”She has called for “Ban the Box” from job applications.

This important change, “Ban the Box,” would allow an individual with a criminal record an opportunity for a job interview. One of the major contributing causes of our high recidivism rate is the lack of jobs for released inmates. In 2015, the Manhattan Institute released a study showing that immediate employment for released inmates reduces recidivism.

Let us examine closely the plans of the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, on criminal justice reform. There are no plans. Trump has not issued any recommendations for the reform of our broken system of justice.

If your goal is reform of our criminal justice system, the choice in November is quite easy!

Lee– I think this post is inappropriate for this forum.

Bradley Schwartz– I respect your opinion, but this election will have an impact on our justice system which includes the issue of employment for released inmates.

Ron Martinelli== As a retired police detective and a forensic criminologist who deals with the end result of violent crime and recidivism every day, I completely agree with you that the choice in November is easy – Just not the candidate YOU have chosen.

Our criminal justice system needs to be completely overhauled and Hillary Clinton is certainly NO role model to accomplish that. In fact, soon, she might very well be indicted and experiencing the prison system from BEHIND BARS.

I have written extensively about rising crime rates, their causes, and the fact that our prison system needs to be completely overhauled. However, the Obama administration has done absolutely NOTHING to lead the fight to overhaul our archaic criminal justice and prison systems. The proof is not in words, but in DEEDS. Hillary Clinton did NOTHING as a NY State Senator to overhaul her own state’s horrible criminal justice and prison systems when she had the chance. She did NOTHING to overhaul the federal system.

Bradley Schwartz– As always, I respect the opinion of others, but I disagree with you. I cannot think of a worse choice than Mr. Trump. The democratic party is advocating justice reform. I do not see or hear anything from Mr. Trump other than his complaints about a federal judge in charge of a fraud lawsuit against the Trump Universities. What makes this country great, we can express opposing opinions and we will see the choice of the American people in November.

Nickolous– sir I appreciate that u take the opinions of each person however u have forgotten one important thing ….all these politicians lie to get your vote …not one American will be certain what any candidate will or won’t do till they get voted in …as we have seen with out current president …they LIE to get into office and I believe she is lying to get the law enforcement vote however it won’t work most law enforcement I know are for Trump! because we want Americans to come first …we can’t fix the criminal justice system before we fix the economy or the chest sucking wound allowing people to come in illegally any time they want …our borders which we have seen and heard from the Democrats they do not care about and think we shouldn’t even have a border..illegals are a major problem with the criminal justice system and the economy !!!

Ron– We have already seen two separate administrations (Republicans and Democrats) fail miserably in these areas. Let’s try a business man who has a documented history of getting things done and move away from do-nothing politicians for once. BTW, both parties created the environment of governmental distrust, incompetence, and do-nothing, which in turn has brought about a sizable anger of the populace to seek a different person and direction for the future of this nation. We already KNOW the past. Let’s look forward to a new future in problem solving

Roy–Thanks Ron, Mr. Schwartz’s political bias is very obvious and has nothing to do with the serious issue of Criminal Justice reform. Mr. Schwartz does not belong in a professional forum like this when he use politics instead of reason to justify his position. Thats why we need get politicis out this issue and solve the problem

Bradley Schwartz My primary goal is criminal justice reform. How do you achieve this goal without the involvement of politics?

  13. PrisonPath June 11, 2016 at 1:11 am #

Nita– Bradley Schwartz, you avoid it by educating the public and individual candidates as people, rather than as Dems and Repubs. You know, like we should consider people as people regardless of their gender? Easy peasy.
