We are parents new to the experience and the facility. We have travelled to Henrico West twice from New England in the last week. On the 2nd visit, the visitation schedule was mixed up and after following all of the rules, making the appointment ahead of time, arriving early, having a picture ID, traveling and staying overnight we were unable to see our son. Also, the phones are very challenging and frequently cut off the calls before we are able to speak. For new inmates and families this is very frightening as we are unfamiliar with the system and fearful of what may have happened. Communication is vital, especially in the first weeks of incarceration. There have also been times when phones were shut off, something we did not know about and for people new to the jail system this can also be very disconcerting. All of the online info I read says that you value family ties and encourage them. These issues do not support that philosophy. I respect the need for strict rules and structure but I think everyone benefits from a system where communication is supported.
I sympathize with you. The whole process is very disheartening. We are often asked at Prisonpath about visitation rules at many of the prisons and jails. We try to give the best information that we have , but it is always recommended that you call the prison that you are visiting to confirm the schedule and rules. Even with doing that extra measure of caution, the prison may change the schedule and rules at the last minute. the telephone systems have their own problems.
How can we send money to a pretrial inmate?
usually pretrial inmates do not have a long stay at a facility unless bond cannot be arranged. I would recommend calling the facility directly for this information.
